Managing Health Services: Concept and practice
Mary G Harris and Associates

Society for Health Administration Programs in Education (SHAPE) and
Australian College of Health Services Executives

This title fills a need for a text for students and practising managers that deals with the concepts and strategies of health care management and leadership, and stimulates and supports innovative educational approaches to the issue of effective management. In a health industry which is dynamic and under pressure, community demands for quality health services are increasing, as are costs of these services. Resources are scarce and governments demand value for money and balanced budgets. Morbidity patterns are changing as populations age. Chronic diseases are complex to manage. In this challenging context of change there is a need for highly skilled and collaborative decision making. The key is education, and the authors envision a cycle of learning, involving managers’ personal resources in a complex organisational and policy environment, of an on-going and interactive nature. There are useful pedagogic features to assist the reader, including case vignettes, copious tables, figures, discussion questions and excellent reference lists. The final chapter on applying theory to practice presents a number of longer cases with suggestions on how they might be used to assist learning. The authorship represents a group of senior health service management academics and practising health care managers.
